The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
