The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling His 20 Days In Custody

The ex-president of France is preparing a memoir next month titled Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience served in custody.

The revelation came just 11 days following Sarkozy gained freedom as he contests his conviction on charges of criminal conspiracy in a case to secure election campaign funds linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he notes in a preview, implying the account centers around his thoughts while in solitary confinement rather than wider commentary regarding the packed and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where one hears constant sound,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life grows stronger in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated by video link from inside the facility, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark every inmate because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

The former president, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is did he manage to read and critique the three books he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Count of Monte Cristo, where a blameless person is imprisoned but escapes to take revenge.

Daily Reality

He remained in solitary confinement for his own security in a room roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison located in the capital. Security personnel were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated his diet consisted solely dairy snacks in prison worried that meals provided may have been contaminated. Options were available to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, according to reports. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain every day throughout the jail term, told the release hearing security would be better outside jail compared to inside. “There were death threats, has heard screaming during nighttime and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began on 21 October after the judiciary imposed five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, with a new trial set for next spring.
