The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
