Offspring of Former South African Leader Jacob Zuma Denies Terrorism Charges as Trial Commences
The daughter of former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban city.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being charged over comments she published on online platforms several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that followed the arrest of her parent.
A period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and arson, caused at least three hundred dead and caused damage worth an projected $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
The defendant has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and is charged with allegations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.
Context of the Case
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the former president's detention for defying a judicial ruling to testify at an probe into accusations of graft while he was holding office.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her lawyer earlier calling the government's legal argument as weak.
She has also repeatedly claimed the accusations against her were an attempt to address political grievances with her father after he founded his own political organization and campaigned against the African National Congress.
Support and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the ex-leader and his family.
A handful of backers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other organization officials attended the hearings inside.
The defendant's representatives has maintained that the testimony presented by government lawyers is insufficient and lacks concrete grounds for a guilty verdict.
