New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
