We are verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
