Israelis have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A prominent representative involved in the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • Future management of the region

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place feels like home any longer and until each abducted person are released not a single person will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about 70% of the population want the war to end in as payment for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of the gathering, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From the site, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"As the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his head on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli troops while seeking help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
