Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
A recent term emerged several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities has denied these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is accused of. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.
The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. A contest that once promoted togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
