Ayoub El Kaabi's Breathtaking Strike Secures Morocco's Win Over Comoros in Afcon First Game.
The the Moroccan side shook off a nervy beginning to overcome Comoros in the competition's opening game on the weekend, thanks to the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.
It was a far from convincing display, though, from the strongly favored Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the small island nation in the world rankings and had to work tirelessly for the three points in wet conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Tense Start and Missed Chances
The hosts failed to convert an first-half spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at the interval even with controlling possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
The goal arrived after full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before laying it square for Díaz to calmly pass into the net.
Every opening game is always difficult but we came good in the second period,” said manager Walid Regragui.
The Substitute's Piece of Magic
Any lingering nerves was subsequently eased by a piece of pure genius from substitute El Kaabi. Just ten minutes after his introduction, the forward met a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the result.
Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been the lead in the 11th minute after a penalty was given for a challenge on Díaz. However, Rahimi's penalty was saved by keeper Yannick Pandor.
Comoros Resistance and Late Opportunity
The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco at bay before the hosts' individual talent eventually told.
Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor pulled off a number of other fine saves to limit the score as the game progressed, although his team did have a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following Díaz's goal, with Saïd firing directly into Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.
Injury Worry for Hosts
The three points was somewhat marred by an apparent injury to the skipper, Romain Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute in tears.
The centre-back had just returned to the national side last month following a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.
The win extends Morocco's record-breaking run of successive wins to 19, beating the old record of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
